Of all the equipment or items you may need for a good hydroponic system, none is more critical than the nutrients you use. A good, well balanced nutrient is absolutely essential no matter what type or how large a system you have or plan on having.
A good hydroponic plant nutrient must fulfill the following requirements: Be complete - containing every mineral element, both major and trace, required by all green plants for optimum plant growth. Be well balanced - containing enough of all mineral elements so no deficiency occurs and not so much of any element that might cause a toxicity problem. Be pH balanced and buffered - preventing the pH from drifting too high (alkaline) or too low (acid). This is controlled by the amount and type of nitrogen used, ideally between 10 and 25% ammoniacal and 75 to 90% nitrate nitrogen - the same ratios the plants use up. Be water soluble with minimal or no residue. The mineral salts used should readily dissociate into elemental ions and not contain any toxic chemicals or elements like heavy metals (lead, mercury or tungsten). This comes about from the purity and selection of the raw ingredients used.
Fortunately, complete nutrients that are cost effective are now readily available. Eco was the first company to develop and market such a nutrient for the general public, as well as the retail and commercial markets, in 1972. That product is Ecogrow Standard with a 10-8-14 N-P-K (% Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium, respectively). It is one of the best all-purpose plant nutrients for soil or hydroponics - indoors, outdoors or in a greenhouse. Over the years, special formulas of Ecogrow and Ecobloom were invented to fill a variety of needs in different climates, on different types of plants and with different systems and growing mediums. With specific knowledge of your system, plant types and climate, it is an easy matter to choose the type of Ecogrow best suited for your needs.

Other considerations when choosing a plant nutrient include:
Cost effectiveness - In quantity, Ecogrow costs under 3 1/2 cents per gallon of nutrient solution, much less than most competitive brands!
Concentrated - Why buy water! Eco liquids at 2 tsp. per gallon are the most concentrated available, and Eco water-soluble powders are even more so.
To help you choose the proper formula for your particular situation (plants and environment), here is a brief rundown on what each type of Ecogrow is suited for:
Ecogrow Standard (10-8-14 N-P-K) was developed for the Pacific N.W. Climate (temperate zone). It is ideal for our most popular hydroponic plants - tomatoes, cukes, lettuce and bell peppers. Overall, it is probably the best hydroponic plant nutrient on the market today!
Ecogrow "S" (15-7-12) is a subtropical formula that, in essence, is half Ecogrow Std. and half Ecogrow "M". Plants that respond best to the "S" formula are those typical to southern California and Florida, including citrus and succulents.
Ecogrow "M" (20-6-12) is a tropical formula patterned after an Israeli formula for growing, split-leaf "Monstera" pHilodendrons. This high nitrogen formula is ideal for tropical broad leaf plants at high temperatures (80o to 100o F, 26o to 30oC.) and high light levels (2000 to 5000 foot candles/square meter). "M" will turn a garden into a jungle!
Ecobloom (3-35-10) is a low nitrogen, high pHospHorous formula for use on mature plants or to hasten maturity. It is ideal for indoor or greenhouse growing with limited ceiling height. This formula slows vegetative growth while maximizing flowering and fruitation.
Rockwool became a popular growing medium in 80's and continues to be so. It is sterile, inert and moisture retentive. Eco introduced the "R" formulas in the late 1980's to fulfill the exacting requirements for plants growing hydroponically in this growing medium.
Ecogrow "R" (14-6-17) is a proven nutrient based, in part, on the Ecogrow "S" formula but with substantial differences. Because it is highly concentrated, it is sold as a two-part formula to prevent adverse chemical reactions. Rockwool has a basic tendency to drift alkaline (pH above 7), which is why we designed the "R" formulas to be slightly more acid than the other Ecogrow powder formulas.
Ecobloom "R" (6-25-17) is the companion to Ecogrow "R" and fulfills the same purpose as Ecobloom (3-35-10) in promoting flowering and fruitation on mature plants while maintaining health and vigor.
Eco Enterprises has selected what they consider to be the best hydroponic nutrients available.
